  • COVER STORY: HI, MA, NO HANDS!\ HEADSETS, SPEAKERPHONES USUALLY ARE THE SAFEST CALLS FOR OPERATING PHONE IN CAR``
    `
There are safer ways to drive than with a crooked neck or with a hand on a cellphone.
Cellphones --- a ubiquitous part of daily living --- are distracting a half-million drivers at any given time on America's roads and highways, says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
On April 29, model Niki Taylor was critically injured in a car crash in Atlanta when her friend took his eyes off the road to reach for his ringing cellphone. She was nearly killed when the car struck a telephone pole on Ponce de Leon Avenue. Taylor is one of thousands hurt each year in accidents involving distracted drivers. Every day between 4,000 and 8,000 distracted driving crashes occur in the United States, according to the American Automobile Association.

Using a hand-held cellphone while operating a motor vehicle is now illegal in New York, and 43 states have considered similar laws, including Georgia.

    Voice activation
But in the meantime in Atlanta, where the average commute is 33 minutes one way, multitasking is hard to resist. Although it's safest to park before you talk, hands-free phone systems are the next best thing.
"Sometimes I feel like a telephone operator," said Amanda Fashano of her multiple hands-free devices. The pharmaceutical rep's cellphone is always within arm's length.
In and out of doctor's offices for ProtoCol, the Atlanta resident typically spends four to five hours a day in her Honda Civic making and taking up to 30 calls daily. But her Body Glove headset and Navigator speakerphone kit allow her hands to remain at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock on the steering wheel.
The Good Houskeeping Institute, which recently tested several cellphone accessories, recommends using a system with voice activation: The driver simply presses a button and speaks the number into a microphone. The caller's voice may be piped through car speakers (https://carspeakerland.com/the-best-car-s…-on-the-market/) or amplified in some other way. But installing a voice-activated system that works through car speakers is pricey --- about $500.
General Motors now includes its OnStar Personal Calling voice-activated system on most new models. But service costs up to 44 cents a minute, and you can't take the phone with you on foot.
    Three categories
A less expensive option: Sign up for voice-activated dialing through carriers such as Sprint or Verizon (about $5 per month) and buy a hands-free kit --- no complex wiring required.
The selection of hands-free kits can be overwhelming, but they basically fall into three categories: earbuds (similar to earplugs, they may be uncomfortable for long periods of time), headsets (which wrap around the head or ear) and speakerphone kits (usually a cradle with attached speakers that plugs into the car's cigarette lighter).
In Georgia it is illegal to wear any headset or headphones that impair the driver's ability to hear, such as those worn with portable music players. So most hands-free communication devices cover only one ear. And in the world of hands-free, "noise-canceling" means that noises coming through with your voice are reduced --- but not the noises you hear around you.
The Good Houskeeping Institute recently tested 12 hands-free kits, and two models stood out.
The CCM Navigator Plus Car Kit ($69.95) turns a cellphone into a speakerphone. A headset isn't necessary --- a cradle holds the phone securely, so there's no fumbling with the keypad while driving. And when Good Housekeeping tried it on a busy highway, the reception was clear. The unit fits a variety of models, including Audiovox, Ericsson, Motorola, Nextel, Nokia, Samsung and Siemens phones.
The Plantronics M114 Headset ($32.95) plugs into a phone. Its microphone muffles background noise, so callers won't have to shout above traffic. The M114 is compatible with most cellphones, though some models, such as Nokia and Ericsson, require an adapter ($29.95).
Hands-free products are made for specific phone models or are labeled "universal," which indicates they are made to fit any cellphone. But not all phones and equipment work together. Richard Donlin, owner of Wireless Dimensions, recommends that consumers bring their phone when shopping and test equipment before buying.
"Each phone and each person has different wants and desires," he said.
Such add-on devices require a cellphone with a 2.5 mm headset jack or a headset jack adapter, which is readily found at most wireless and electronics stores.
    Other distractions

Although two hands on your steering wheel are better than one, keep in mind that cellphone attachments are not a panacea.
"The thing to keep in mind, there is a fair amount of research that it is not the phone that is the distraction --- it is the conversation," said Stephanie Faul, communications director for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
Faul recommends that if even if you are going to go hands-free, limit yourself to one thing while driving. In many cases cellphones are not the only distractions behind the wheel. Drivers are talking on phones and doing other things: adjusting the stereo, turning around to look at children, eating or taking notes.
"Besides, the truth is, driving is boring," Faul said, "and no one ever says that."

  • Weil Yahoo Edge verwendet.
